Can you be a Christian and a Democrat?

This question has been asked time and again in the United States. The simple and honest answer is NO.

Why? Because when measured against the Bible, the Gospels, and the teachings of Jesus Christ, the core policies and beliefs of the Democratic Party stand in direct conflict with authentic Christianity. Those who claim otherwise are not holding to the true faith, but to a counterfeit version of it.

To be a Christian, you must believe in the Gospels, the authority of the Bible, and the Holy Trinity. Without that foundation, you have already stepped outside the faith.

The Bible on Life and Abortion

While the word abortion does not explicitly appear in Scripture, the Bible is filled with passages affirming the sanctity of life from the womb. These verses are the foundation of Catholic teaching—and indeed the broader Christian teaching—against abortion.

Passages About God Creating Life in the Womb

• Psalm 139:13–16 – “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb… Your eyes saw my unformed body.”
• Jeremiah 1:5 – “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.”
• Isaiah 49:1 – “The LORD called me from the womb, from the body of my mother he named my name.”
• Job 31:15 – “Did not he who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us both within our mothers?”

Passages Affirming the Value of Children

• Psalm 127:3–5 – “Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him.”
• Matthew 19:14 – “Let the little children come to me… for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Passages on Protecting Innocent Life

• Exodus 20:13 – “You shall not murder.” (applied by many Christians to unborn life)
• Proverbs 6:16–17 – God hates “hands that shed innocent blood.”

God’s Sovereignty Over Life

• Deuteronomy 30:19 – “I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.”
• Ecclesiastes 11:5 – “As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.”

The New Mexico Example

Here in New Mexico, the tragedy is even more glaring. Our state exports more college graduates than any other, draining away the very future we should be investing in. At the same time, we have become the abortion capital of America. This reality is both heartbreaking and shameful, and it shows just how far political leadership has drifted from biblical truth.

On average in recent years, New Mexico has seen around 12,700 to 12,800 abortions per year.

• 2024: Approximately 12,800 abortions (Guttmacher Institute).
• 2023: Some estimates reported numbers as high as ~21,000 abortions in state clinics (KOB.com).
• Trend: The most consistent estimate centers around 12,700 annually (Guttmacher Institute).

The Bible may not use the word abortion, but it consistently teaches that:
• Life is sacred.
• God is the author of life from conception.
• Children are blessings, not burdens.
• Shedding innocent blood is condemned.

Beyond Abortion: Other Democratic Policies at Odds with Christianity

1. Redefining Marriage

Biblical View: Marriage is defined in Genesis 2:24 and reaffirmed by Jesus in Matthew 19:4–6 as the union of one man and one woman.
Democratic Party: Actively redefines marriage to include same-sex unions, and in many cases, penalizes or silences those who hold to the biblical definition.

2. Gender Ideology

Biblical View: “Male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:27). God made humanity in two sexes, with unique and complementary roles.
Democratic Party: Promotes policies that deny biological reality, push gender confusion in schools, and encourage medical interventions that permanently harm children.

3. Religious Freedom

Biblical View: Christians are called to worship God freely and boldly proclaim the Gospel (Acts 4:19–20).
Democratic Party: Increasingly seeks to limit religious liberty by forcing Christian businesses, schools, and ministries to comply with secular, anti-biblical agendas—or face lawsuits, fines, and closure.

4. Family and Parental Rights

Biblical View: Parents are entrusted by God to raise their children in the fear and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4, Deuteronomy 6:6–7).
Democratic Party: Promotes policies that strip parents of their rights in favor of government control, especially when it comes to education, healthcare, and moral instruction.

A Call to Action for Christians

The evidence is clear: the teachings of Scripture and the platform of the Democratic Party cannot be reconciled. To follow Christ means to stand firmly on His Word, even when it is unpopular, inconvenient, or countercultural.

Christians in New Mexico—and across America—must make a choice. Will we be silent, or will we stand for truth? Will we allow our culture to be shaped by lies, or will we boldly proclaim the Gospel?

It is time to:
• Stand firm in faith – Do not compromise God’s Word for political convenience.
• Vote biblically – Align your civic responsibility with biblical truth, not party loyalty.
• Defend life and family – Be a voice for the voiceless, protect children, and uphold God’s design for family.
• Resist compromise – Even when pressured, hold fast to Christ’s teachings.

The question is not simply whether you can be a Christian and a Democrat.

The real question is: Will you choose Christ, or will you choose the world?
